DC Shoes x SSUR collaboration footwear...

Fresh new shoes from DC's 'artist projects' collaboration series of footwear and clothing. The latest product to arrive at Urban Industry is the SSUR II shoe from the Russian born Ruslan Karablin, better known in the art/design world as SSUR.

The limited edition collaboration includes SSUR's unique artwork and intricate detailing (specially designed shoelace toggles and an image printed on the sole!) combined with DC's well know product quality.

OBEY - SHEPARD FAIREY'S NINETEENEIGHTYPHORIA EXHIBITION

On the 1st November we headed up to Brick Lane, London and the huge Stolen Space gallery to check out Obey clothing's founder, Shepard Fairey's biggest ever artwork exhibition in the UK.

Nineteeneightyphoria is a huge collection of Shepard's work all in one place from small 12inch sized framed artwork to wall filling, massive pieces its all there. You could really get up close and personal and see how much detail Shepard puts into each piece. Shepard himself was there in person, dj'ing and laying on the soundtrack for event!

The show is open to the public from the 2nd - 18th November 2007 so get on down there, take a look and see the background to the excellent Obey clothing we stock at the Urban Industry Store.

The new Urban Industry Store is now open for business! We've opened a boutique, destination store inside our brand new warehouse.

We've distilled our entire collection of street wear into one place, we're open to the public daily, Monday - Friday, 10am - 5pm and Saturday 10 - 2pm

While you're there browsing we'll be on hand with coffee, tea and maybe a few biscuits if Lorraine hasn't eaten them already!

If you register with us in store we'll give you one of our new Store Discount cards which can be used every time you come down and visit us. We have free car parking right outside the door which is a major plus point as the dreaded meters have just gone in outside our old store. So if you're in Eastbourne come on down and pay us a visit.

Our place is so new (they literally finished building the unit 3 months ago) that the map might not show the road right up to us...plus i think google earth shows a patch of waste land for where we are! The Google Spy in the sky must have flown over a year or so ago...

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has announced further strike action. Two 48-hour strikes are planned. The first will begin at lunchtime on Thursday 4th October and ends at lunchtime on Saturday 6th October. The second will begin in the early hours of Monday 8th October, ending in the early hours of Wednesday 10th October.

This will be followed by an unspecified programme of weekly strikes, starting week commencing October 15th, until the resolution of the dispute.

Kanye West wore this bad boy to a Stella McCartney fashion catwalk show last year and caused a storm, back then the Hoody was produced in limited numbers and were exchanging for some serious wedge on eBay....This time round LRG are producing the same zip hood in three colour options only for a UK release!

URBAN INDUSTRY STORE IN ON THE MOVE

Yup..thats right...We're upping sticks here at the Urban Industry Store and moving to new warehousing and showroom premises, bringing the whole thing under one roof again.

In the meantime we'd like to apologise to a few customers that have experienced problems with items being out of stock, we are presently in heavy sale in our offline store clearing odd stock built up from when we opened. This has impacted on our normal operations and twinned with moving stock and opening the new warehouse some items have strayed outside on stocktaking.

We hope to be fully back with 99% correct stock levels by the 19th August when we make the final push into the warehouse.

Following this we are opening a brand new concept, boutique show room open to anyone who can make it down to sunny Eastbourne! Coffee, tea and a relaxed shopping experience await...

Gravis x Staple Shoe Collaboration - October 2007

Gravis have teamed up with the top streetwear design consultant, Staple Design, to come up with an exclusive Black Box Collection of shoes, bags and accessories for the late model release. The line draws inspiration from the winters in New York City, containing colours of white, black and grey to symbolize the snowfall onto the busy streets of Manhattan. A special Cobble camo print is weaved through the line along with city snow iconography, collaborative labels and footbeds, and accompanying metal co-branded dice. Volcomics Art Gallery, Brick Lane, London, June 28th 2007

Urban Industry went up to the launch party of the Volcomics Art Gallery last Thursday lured by free beer....and some artwork..

Volcom have released a full on comic book featuring artwork, cartoons and weird illustrations from a wide array of international artists, some of which have collaborated with Volcom on product design in previous collections...on a worldwide tour the art show dropped into London on the only European date, other shows are due in New York, LA, San Francisco and Tokyo.

Work from artists such as Michael Sieben, Matt French, Ozzie Wright, Jamie Lynn, Mike Aho, Travis Millard all featured on the night. The venue in Brick Lane was packed with the industries great and the good all making full use of the free lager...and obviously taking in the fine artwork covering the gallery walls..

It began in Suburban London in my parent’s house but was conceived in

Vans Shoes Hugh Holland, Angels. Street. Skate. Seventies - Brighton 21st June

We all shot over to Brighton last night to see the Vans shoes sponsored, first UK exhibition of photographer Hugh Holland.s iconic Angels series....loads of cool pictures from the era...the free beer flowed and we checked the shots of some real, back in the day, original skatboarding, including stacey peralta. Thanks to Nick at Vans for the invite...here's some more info in the evening..

After recent first showings in Los Angeles and New York, the exhibition, entitled Angels. Street. Skate. Seventies will open at Crane Kalman Brighton on 21st June to coincide with National Go Skateboarding Day. These seminal images document the classic era of the early skateboard scene in California in the early 1970.s, with many of the images featuring the now legendary names of the sport, such as Jay Adams and Stacy Peralta. Holland began documenting the burgeoning skate phenomenon in 1975 after becoming instantly captivated through a chance encounter with this group of skateboarding kids whilst driving up Laurel Canyon Boulevard, LA. Fervent enthusiasm for the energy of the counterculture quickly certified Holland.s acceptance within the community. Every spare moment was spent capturing the everyday social interactions of groups, such as the notorious Zboys from Santa Monica and Venice. It was this group of stylish, rebellious skaters that became known as the Dogtown crew, now immortalised in Peralta.s iconic documentary .Dogtown & Z-boys., and it was the Vans Era shoe, designed by Peralta and skate legend Tony Alva that became skateboarding.s first shoe and the signature style of the emerging 70.s skate scene.

Holland successfully captures the exhilaration and rebellion felt during the birth of the scene. The summer drought of 1976 especially illustrates the attitude, when the skate kids seized the opportunity to brake into and carve up the emptied California neighbourhood pools and street drainage bowls.

Even though Arcus is a dedicated Snowboard brand it doesn't mean that they only produce clothing for the Snowboard season. After a successful winter season, Arcus has returned this Spring with a range of strong t-shirt and hooded sweatshirt prints.

Arcus was started in 2000 as a snow/skate streetwear brand by two of the best European snowboarders, Nicolas Muller and Fredi Kalbermatten, both from Swizterland. Together with Mauro Paolozzi a highly talented design artist, they created a brand different from anything else. The aim is to produce the finest streetwear with right proportion of style and quality. Arcus is not just following the mainstream but, creating its own style!

Ambiguous Clothing have done a nice tie up in supporting the excellent Mumm-Ra and Young Plan on their UK wide tour after our Good Measure Magazine photoshoot with the guys in the Urban Industry Store basement a few months ago.

Good Measure magazine's photographer Paul Martin is tagging along for a few of the dates, Good Measure magazine will be availble at a few of the gigs with a Young Plan feature inside.

OBEY VS A-TRAK MIX CD IN STOCK NOW

Music is a huge influence in the design and overall aesthetic of OBEY Giant and OBEY Clothing since it’s inception in 1989. At this year’s SXSW in Austin, OBEY will release it’s fourth mixtape installment featuring DJ A-Trak, 5 time DMC World Champion and currently Kanye West’s tour DJ. With this launch, OBEY’s mixtape series continue to build it’s own musical catalog with tastemakers around the world.

A-Trak and Shepard Fairey had known about each other for years, but only actually met in the Summer of 2006 at a DJ battle in San Francisco. From that point on, they would run into each other in the strangest places, from airports to events in different parts of the world. They knew they wanted to collaborate on a project, and A-Trak was already familiar with OBEY's mixtape series. So when he told Shepard about a new project he had started, which was a collection of remixes, blending new electro tracks with crunk/rap acapellas and added production, it felt like the perfect fit. These remixes started with A-Trak experimenting with ways to integrate more up-tempo, electronic tracks in his sets while keeping a gritty rap feel. Not satisfied with simple blends, he would chop up parts of the rap tracks and beef up drums here and there. Next thing you know he had 15 of these remixes and spent weeks assembling the mix itself.

When Shepard heard A-Trak's concept for the mix, it seemed like a great opportunity to mix up a couple visual styles in the same spirit as the music. Shepard pulled from A-Trak's love of subversive animals and poppy colors and mixed it with an electro/disco version of his iconic OBEY aesthetics. The result is something unique, but distinctly A-Trak/Obey.

This CD marks yet another step in A-Trak's growth beyond the turntablist realm and into a party-rocking style that falls somewhere between electronic music and hip hop. He has just founded a new label with Nick Catchdubs called Fool's Gold and is currently working on Kid Sister's debut album, his own solo album, various remixes as well as his mini-line of collaborations with Streetwear brands, Sunglasses Is A Must.
Along with the Mixtape, OBEY will release a limited screen-printed poster and a limited t-shirt exclusively sold in premiere music and clothing shops/boutiques worldwide.

Textile workers in Bangladesh get paid as little as five pence an hour to make cheap clothes for UK companies Tesco, Asda and Primark, says a report.
The mainly female workers regularly spend 80 hours per week in "potential death trap" factories, according to anti-poverty group War On Want.

Tesco, Asda and Primark all strongly denied the allegations.

War On Want based its report on interviews with 60 workers from six Bangladeshi garment factories.

It said that starting wages at the factories were as little as £8 a month, barely one third of the living wage in Bangladesh.

War On Want added that wages rose to £16 per month for better-paid sewing machine operators, but that some workers spent up to 96 hours per week in the factories without even a day a week off.

It said that while Primark, Tesco and Asda had all signed up to a set of principles to provide decent working conditions and wages for workers in their supply chain, some of their suppliers were "regularly violating" such rules.

"Bargain retailers such as Primark, Asda and Tesco are only able to sell at rock bottom prices in the UK because women workers in Bangladesh are being exploited," said War on Want chief executive Louise Richards.

"The companies are not even living up to their own commitments towards their overseas suppliers."

War On Want said it wanted UK shoppers to know what it saw as the "true costs" of clothes sold by the three retailers.

We've just taken delivery of the Eastpak Limited Edition Rock Bags. This Summer Eastpak present a super limited edition of bags with artwork by living rock legends, Ozzy Osbourne, Slash and Lemmy.

The bags are in selected stores across Europe from June and are available in strictly limited quantities of only 3000 per design world wide.

The original print concepts have been created by the artists themselves and applied to the classic Eastpak Padded Pak R Bag. Eastpak will donate 10% of the retail price ro the charity nominated by the three artists themselves.

Eastpak Bags are collaborating with 21st Century Leaders, an organisation that aims to raise funds to tackle key global development issues including poverty alleviation,child abuse and environmental conservation whilst creating fair and sustainable employment in developing countries. OBEY'S SHEPARD FAIREY BOOK SIGNING, BOND, LONDON

A good evening was had by all last week at the Shepard Fairey book signing at Bond, London. We popped along a little bit earlier to catch Shepard Fairey, the man behind the cult urban art brand OBEY, still pasting up a disused retail space just off Carnaby Street.

Back to Bond for a spot of book signing, and a cool book it is too! A big, big book showing a huge amount of Shepard's work over the years..well worth buying once it comes out on full release later this year.

After that the free beer flowed back at the retail/art space round the corner where we could take in the walls covered in OBEY posters and framed artwork...cheers to Simon at OBEY UK....

The Shadow Conspiracy, helmed by Ronnie B, is a BMX parts company which for the past three years has consistently introduced unique BMX hardware designed with creative themes of subversion. The Shadow Conspiracy is distinctly regarded within the BMX industry for their meticulous attention to detail, as shown within their projects and products, such as a patented BMX bike chain, finely constructed saddles, and their novel ad campaigns that constantly push the envelope in guerilla marketing.

In 1999, Andrew Lee launched Invisible:Man, which has since gained a notorious reputation worldwide. I:M is creating controversy within the high-end street market for its usage of raw graphics, dark themes, and innovative cut-n-sew. I:M has also released several collaborations with Stussy, Neighborhood, MadFoot!, and Es Footwear.

The collaborative efforts of both parties in producing this custom engineered 24” Cruiser is not only a technical feat, but pushes the boundaries of high-end street fashion aesthetic and redefines the style of BMX sport.

The finish on the Cruiser is matte black with black gloss decals – artwork by Andrew of Invisible:Man.
